A reminder about Tithing
A couple points on tithing are brought up in this post.
This post Are We Paying Too Much Tithing? is what really woke me up, and as mentioned in The Holy Spirit and The Holy Ghost are the Same, I swore loudly in my head when I read it, it was such a shock and big deal to me.
Here are some scriptures:
JST Genesis 14:37-39
37 And he lifted up his voice, and he blessed Abram, being the high priest, and the keeper of the storehouse of God; 38 Him whom God had appointed to receive tithes FOR THE POOR. 39 Wherefore, Abram paid unto him tithes of all that he had, of all the riches which he possessed, which God had given him MORE THAN THAT WHICH HE HAD NEED.
D&C (LDS 119:4-5) (RLDS 106) (1844 107)
4 And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay ONE TENTH of all their INTEREST annually; and this shall be a STANDING LAW unto them FOREVER, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord. 5 Verily I say unto you, it shall come to pass that all those who gather unto the land of Zion shall be TITHED of their SURPLUS properties, and shall observe this law, or they shall not be found worthy to abide among you.
We are to pay a tithe of our wine, partly by consuming it. (see Word of Wisdom)
Deuteronomy 14:23 And thou shalt EAT before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the TITHE of thy corn, of thy WINE, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always.
Deuteronomy 14:26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for WINE, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt EAT there before the Lord thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,
Tithes should stay local.
Deuteronomy 26:12 When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled;
Wich regards to D&C (LDS 119:4-5) (RLDS 106) (1844 107) it is wise to know the definitions of words when the revelation was given.
SUR’PLUS, noun [Latin id., more.]
1. Overplus; that which remains when use is satisfied; excess beyond what is prescribed or wanted. In the United States, the surplus of wheat and rye not required for consumption or exportation, is distilled.
2. In law, the residuum of an estate, after the debts and legacies are paid.

STANDING, participle present tense

The celestial law requires one tenth part of all a man’s substance, which he possesses at the time he comes into the church and one tenth part of his annual increase ever after. The celestial law does not take the mother’s and children’s bread, neither ought else, which they need for their comfort. The poor that have not this world’s goods to spare, but serve and honour God according to the best of their abilities in every other way, shall have a celestial crown in the eternal kingdom of our Father

Tithing means one-tenth. Those who give less do not really pay tithing; they are lesser contributors to the Latter-day cause of the Lord. Tithing means one-tenth of a person’s income, interest, or increase. The merchant should pay tithing upon the net income of his business, the farmer upon the net income of his farming operations; the wage earner or salaried man upon the wage or salary earned by him. Out of the remaining nine-tenths he pays his current expenses … etc. To deduct living costs … and similar expenses from the income and pay tithing upon the remainder does not conform to the Lord’s commandment. Under such a system most people would show nothing on which to pay tithing. There is really no place for quibbling on this point. Tithing should be given upon the basis of our full earned income. If the nature of a business requires special interpretation, the tithepayer should consult the father of his ward, the bishop.
Evidences and Reconciliations, 2:86
One thing to keep in mind is that the Lord asked for offerings to build the Tabernacle, not tithing. If God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, do you think He would change how He would fund places He will dwell (Exodus 25:8).
Exodus 25 (whole chapter but here are a few excerpts)
1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering. 3 And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver, and brass,
8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.
Exodus 35 (whole chapter but here are a few excerpts)
4 And Moses spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the Lord commanded, saying, 5 Take ye from among you an offering unto the Lord: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the Lord; gold, and silver, and brass,
11 The tabernacle, his tent, and his covering, his taches, and his boards, his bars, his pillars, and his sockets,
21 And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the Lord’s offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.
29 The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the Lord, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the Lord had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.
I have quite a while I have believed tithing is not for any type of buildings period, for example the tabernacle in the wilderness was built from offerings and the people were told to stop giving, according LDS D&C 119 tithing is a standing law forever.

I believe FINE is not a qualifying word, but a word describing how bad it has gotten. Thus another scripture that shows it is offerings that buildings are to be done and not tithing.

2 Nephi (LDS 28:13) (RLDS 12:15) They ROB the POOR because of their FINE SANCTUARIES; they ROB the POOR because of their FINE CLOTHING; and they persecute the meek and the poor in heart, because in their pride they are puffed up.
LDS reports giving 1.4 Billion in 26 years. 53.8 Million a year. divided by 10 million members, I believe there is more, comes out to be 5.38 per member per year, that is not much. Just something to think about lets say there are 1 million members that is only 53.85 per year. Lets take it one step further lets say there are only 100 thousand members that is only 538.46 per year per member. Considering all the tithing that members pay that is not much at all.
A quote from a top LDS / Brighamite leader showing that the LDS church does not focus on helping the poor:
The preeminence of the spiritual over the temporal, which Jesus taught, has many applications in our own day. For example, it explains why our church spends great sums preaching the restored gospel and building temples to perform the ordinances of eternity rather than (as some advocate) devoting these same resources to temporal concerns already being pursued by others, such as preserving the environment, researching cures for diseases, or administering to other physical needs that can be accomplished without priesthood power or direction.

The Book of Mormon teaches we should give of our substance to the POOR.
Alma (LDS 1:27) (RLDS 1:40-41) And they did IMPART of their SUBSTANCE, every man according to that which he had, TO THE POOR, and the NEEDY, and the SICK, and the AFFLICTED; and they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely.
In Alma (LDS 1) (RLDS 1) when the church was rich they gave to all those in need.
Alma (LDS 1:29-30) (RLDS 1:43-46)
29 And now, because of the steadiness of the church they began to be EXCEEDINGLY RICH, having ABUNDANCE of all things whatsoever they stood in need—an abundance of flocks and herds, and fatlings of every kind, and also abundance of grain, and of GOLD, and of SILVER, and of PRECIEUS things, and abundance of silk and fine-twined linen, and all manner of good homely cloth. 30 And thus, in their prosperous circumstances, THEY DID NOT SEND AWAY ANY who were NAKED, or that were HUNGRY, or that were ATHIRST, or that were SICK, or that had not been nourished; and they did not set their hearts upon riches; therefore THEY WERE LIBERAL TO ALL, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, WHETHER OUT of the CHURCH OR IN the CHURCH, having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need.

Letter to an IRS Director is a document sent to the IRS exposing the LDS / Brighamite church breaking 501(c)3 tax laws and not helping the poor despite them telling people they do.
If you decided to watch all of Letter to an IRS Director (Full), you will know it brings up the Kirtland Bank a couple of times. The podcast Religious and Financial Panic in Kirtland – Elizabeth Kuehn (backup) brings out how Joseph Smith did not prophesy regarding it’s outcome, JS lost more than others, and how it seems someone, not JS, was cooking the books. We do have clear evidence, however, that God’s counsel to Joseph was: “And in temporal labors thou shalt not have strength, for this is not thy calling. Attend to thy calling and thou shalt have wherewith to magnify thine office, and to expound all scriptures, and continue in laying on of the hands and confirming the churches.” D&C (LDS 24:9) (RLDS 23) (1833 25) (1835 9) (1844 9)
