The Holy Spirit and The Holy Ghost are the Same

I still remember swearing loudly in my head (I hardly ever swore up to this point in my life) after reading Are We Paying Too Much Tithing? by Alan Rock Waterman from his blog Pure Mormonism. I started researching everything I thought I knew about God and His ways obsessively because of the effect that post had on me. I remember REALLY NEEDING to buy a 1835 Doctrine and Covenants replica, after reading Why I’m Abandoning Polygamy, to verify what section 101 (pg 251, pg 252) of that edition said, because it contradicted what I was taught growing up in the LDS / Brighamite church about marriage. Since than I have studied the subject significantly more. And I have writen a couple articles on the subject and hope to write more when I can. I also put together this resource page that lists many things that has helped me on my discovery on this subject along with Joseph Smith journal entry not long before he was murdered. I also found many reasons why Deseret Book does not sell a 1835 Doctrine and Covenants replica despite the fact you can get a 1830 Book of Mormon replica from the same publisher.

One of the hardest things to do in learning truth is letting go of an idea we cherish of which is just not so. When we strongly believe in an idea that is false and we are presented with an idea that is actually true many of us will experience what is called Cognitive dissonance, which is a discomfort or stress we feel when new evidence clashes with our beliefs. In 1 Nephi (LDS 4:10) (RLDS 1:110-111) Nephi did not want to execute the punishment of the law upon Laban when the Spirit told him to. (Please see Bishops are JUDGEs of Israel and The Book of Mormon and the Law of Moses Episode 1 Part 1 for explainations.) Also our pride we have built up in what we are doing which is actually a sin will make it hard for us to admit we were wrong, I talk about ideas like this in Catch and Understand.

At some point God gave me Exodus 20:26, I don’t remember if He gave the verse to me before or after I removed my name, either way I remembered that God gave it to me and I didn’t do anything with it at the time.

Exodus 20:26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy NAKEDNESS be not DISCOVERED thereon.

This verse has many implications that arise from it including Book of Mormon Geography. What I want to bring out right now is how the Kohen, priests, who worked at the temple did not were garments, if they had there would have been no concern about nakedness being exposed if steps were allowed to be used to go up to the alter.

I knew what the verse was implying about garments when God gave it to me, but I did not want to look into it then because of the fond memories I had of LDS Temples. I still remember a feeling of being on a spiritual high after receiving my personal washings and anointings along with my endowment. I some recently reanalyzed this event and concluded it was along the lines of a self-fulling prophecy as I no longer believe that Joseph Smith had anything to do with any of the LDS temple ceremonies: washing and anointings, endowment, sealings (see Sealing Power on how the Book of Mormon teaches something different about sealings than what the LDS / Brighamite church is doing) or second anointing to name a few. Heck the Book of Mormon teaches against baptisms for the dead (see 2 Nephi (LDS 9:26) (RLDS 6:54-55), Mosiah (LDS 3:11) (RLDS 1:107), Mosiah (LDS 15:24) (RLDS 8:58-59), Moroni (LDS 8:22-23) (RLDS 8:25-27). Not to mention that the Book of Mormon teaches us we can not repent after we die (see 2 Nephi (LDS 2:21) (RLDS 1:107-110), Mosiah (LDS 2:33) (RLDS 1:74-75), Mosiah (LDS 15:26-27) (RLDS 8:61-65), Alma (LDS 34:32-35) (RLDS 16:228-234), Alma (LDS 42:13) (RLDS 19:94-95), Alma (LDS 42:28) (RLDS 19:111)).

22 For behold that all little children are ALIVE IN CHRIST, AND ALSO all they that are WITHOUT THE LAW. For the power of redemption cometh on all them that have no law; wherefore, he that is not condemned, or he that is under no condemnation, cannot repent; and unto such BAPTISM AVAILETH NOTHING— 23 But it is MOCKERY before God, DENYING the MERCIES of CHRIST, and the POWER of his HOLY SPIRIT, and putting trust in DEAD WORKS.

Mosiah (LDS 2:33) (RLDS 1:74-75) For behold, there is a wo pronounced upon him who listeth to obey that spirit; for if he listeth to obey him, and remaineth and DIETH IN HIS SINS, THE SAME DRINKETH DAMNATION TO HIS OWN SOUL; for he receiveth for his wages an EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT, having transgressed the law of God contrary to his own knowledge.

Yes, yes, I know we can find ceremonies like those in LDS temples being done historically around the world. But that does not mean any of them were from God. Mystery Babylon has spread around the world. The ceremonies being performed in LDS / Brighamite temples are of the occult, which is of Mystery Babylon, and not of God. We can see how the works of darkness spread all over.

Helaman (LDS 6:28) (RLDS 2:154) … And it was that same being who led on the people who came from that tower into this land; who spread the works of darkness and abominations over all the face of the land, until he dragged the people down to an entire destruction, and to an everlasting hell.

When the LDS / Brighamite church announced changes to the LDS Temple ceremony, yet again, on Wed 2019-01-02, I decided it was time to take a serious look at the temple ceremony and find out God’s stance on the subject really is. Especially considering these quotes from Joseph Smith.

Ordinances instituted in the heavens before the foundation of the world, in the priesthood, for the salvation of men, are not to be altered or changed. All must be saved on the same principles.

If there is no change of ordinances, there is no change of Priesthood.

Fortunately I had unlearned more falsehoods by this point, including no longer being a Freemason, this is relevant because Brigham Young and others referenced Freemasonry for the LDS Temple ceremonies. I had also learned other things like the similarities between Cochranite ceremonies, whom Brigham Young had been a missionary to, read through JCochran arcticle to find some of them yourself.

When an idea is drilled into your head over and over again, it can linger inside of you without you even knowing it, while affecting what you do and think. I have believed that Brigham Young was a tyrant and horn dog for a very long time, some things I bring out in King Brigham will show that. But for whatever reason the dichotomy between that and what the LDS / Brighamite church taught me about Joseph Smith trusting Brigham Young with LDS Temple ceremonies had not yet surfaced, probably becasue of the fond memories I had of my temple experiences. (Please keep in mind I love symbolism, I find it very meaningful, and I saw lots of it in the temple, and next to none at church.) If you ask me Joseph Smith was in the process of gathering evidence against Brigham Young to excommunicate him for his sins and crimes, which is why Brigham Young helped plan Joseph Smith’s murder, which is talked about in The Exoneration of Emma, Joseph & Hyrum: Part One along with “The Carthage Conspiracy” and Joseph Smith Was Murdered By Freemasons. (Knowing this I find verse Helaman (LDS 6:19) (RLDS 2:128) very telling, especially considering what is being described before and after it, not to mention Helaman (LDS 6:21) (RLDS 2:145).) When that was rooted out of me many other things started to make sense.

Helaman (LDS 6:19) (RLDS 2:128) And it was they [those with secret signs and words] who did murder the chief judge Cezoram [Joseph and Hyrum Smith], and his son [successor, Samuel Smith], while in the judgment-seat; and behold, they were not found.

If Helaman (LDS 6:22-27) (RLDS 2:146-152) does not sound like what happens in LDS Temples along with what members in politics and the law do to protecting the LDS / Brighamite church, and how and why many courts of love [of power] are conducted I don’t know what does. (see McKenna Denson a force for good for examples and Bishops are JUDGEs of Israel for explanation)

Helaman (LDS 6:22-27) (RLDS 2:146-152)
22 And it came to pass that they did have their SIGNS, yea, their SECRET SIGNS, and their SECRET WORDS; and this that they might DISTINGUISH a brother who had ENTERED into the COVENANT, that whatsoever wickedness his brother should do he SHOULD NOT BE INJURED BY HIS BROTHER [upholding their kingdom], nor by those who did belong to his band, who had taken this COVENANT. 23 And thus they might murder, and plunder, and steal, and commit WHOREDOMS and all manner of wickedness, CONTRARY to the LAWS of their COUNTRY and also the LAWS of their GOD. 24 And whosoever of those who BELONGED to their band should REVEAL unto the WORLD of their WICKEDNESS and their ABOMINATIONS, should be TRIED, not according to the laws of their country, BUT ACCORDING TO THE LAWS OF THEIR WICKEDNESS, which had been given by Gadianton and Kishkumen. 25 Now behold, it is these SECRET OATHS and COVENANTS which Alma commanded his son should not go forth unto the world, lest they should be a means of bringing down the people unto DESTRUCTION. 26 Now behold, those SECRET OATHS and COVENANTS did not come forth unto Gadianton from the records which were delivered unto Helaman; but behold, they were put into the heart of Gadianton by that same being who did entice our first parents to partake of the forbidden fruit— 27 Yea, that same being who did plot with Cain, that if he would murder his brother Abel it should not be known unto the world. And he did plot with Cain and his followers from that time forth.

Not to mention that the temple ceremonies that the sons of Aaron performed in the tabernacle, which later was done in the temple, were sacred but not secret as they written in the first five books of the Bible which are also known as the Torah.

It was almost four years after my name was removed I stopped wearing my garments. This was a big thing for me. I was planning on making my own after the ones I had wore out, as that is something the LDS / Brighamite church used to encouraged you to do, but that is another thing that they have slowly changed over time. But I no longer have to worry about that, because I no longer believe that Joseph Smith or God had anything to do with the occultic LDS Temple ceremonies.

Back to my point I am making from a personal experience from my life, if we hold onto a false idea it can prevent us from embracing a truth that would set us free otherwise, see Alma (LDS 3:8) (RLDS 1:106) and John 8:32.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Alma (LDS 3:8) (RLDS 1:106) … [believing] in incorrect traditions which would prove their destruction.

Temples leads into the main subject I want to talk about the HOLY SPIRIT which is also known as the HOLY GHOST.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the SPIRIT of God dwelleth in you?

Figuring out what the HOLY SPIRIT which is also known as the HOLY GHOST is, took me a while to put all the piece together. There are other names that the HOLY SPIRIT / HOLY GHOST go by, but for simplicity I’m only going to focus on those two.

A while back ago I did a very enlightening exercise of searching for all instances of phrases HOLY GHOST and HOLY SPIRIT in the Book of Mormon. I encourage all to look at BoM verses with Holy Ghost and BoM verses with Holy Spirit (at the end of this post, I will be sharing many but not all the verses from both), but it would be better for you to find them yourself, the thought processes we go through when we are actively doing something ourself brings more to us than when we simply passively believe what we are being told. If nothing else we need be actively testing what others are teaching us, see Acts 17:10-11. I learned a lot from that exercise, and do this same thing on a regular basis. (In fact I wrote LDSGospelSearch to do this more effectively, and the two chiasmuses I share later were found using it.)

Acts 17:10-11
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and SEARCHED the SCRIPTURES daily, WHETHER THOSE THINGS WERE so.

It was doing all that scripture searching that showed me that the HOLY SPIRIT and the HOLY GHOST are exactly the same thing just different names.

Another important piece of this puzzle is the Hebrew word(s) behind them, after all the teachings in the Book of Mormon are from the teachings of the fathers who used Hebrew.

1 Nephi (LDS 1:2) (RLDS 1:1) Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the LEARNING OF THE JEWS and the language of the Egyptians.

Mosiah (LDS 1:2) (RLDS ) And it came to pass that he had three sons; and he called their names Mosiah, and Helorum, and Helaman. And he caused that they should be TAUGHT in all the LANGUAGE of his FATHERS [Hebrew], that thereby they might BECOME MEN OF UNDERSTANDING; and that they might know concerning the prophecies which had been spoken by the mouths of their fathers, which were delivered them by the hand of the Lord.

Mormon (LDS 9:33) (RLDS 4:99) And if our plates had been sufficiently large we should have written in HEBREW; but the HEBREW hath been altered by us also; and if we could have written in HEBREW, …

The Hebrew word behind both SPIRIT and GHOST is RUACH. KODESH is the Hebrew word for HOLY, which also means consecrated, sacred, set apart (see BibleHub Hebrew 6918). The Hebrew Roots movement and Messianic congregations will call IT, the Ruach Ha Kodesh. RUACH is found in the Old Testament/Tanak almost 400 times. Numbers 11:17,25,26,19 is one example that shows that God bestowed the RUACH unto His people before Acts 2 which was Shavuot/Pentecost, not to mention many passages in the Book of Mormon stating that we should receive the HOLY SPIRIT or HOLY GHOST before Jesus was resurrected, see Baptisms Order for a few examples.

Numbers 11:17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the SPIRIT [RUACH] which is upon thee, and will put IT upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
Numbers 11:25 And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the SPIRIT [RUACH] that was upon him, and gave IT unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the SPIRIT [RUACH] rested upon them, they PROPHESIED, and did not cease.
Numbers 11:26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the SPIRIT [RUACH] rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they PROPHESIED in the camp.
Numbers 11:29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that ALL the Lord’s people were PROPHETS, and that the Lord would put his SPIRIT [RUACH] upon them!

Keep in mind that one of the gifts of the SPIRIT is prophesying, see Acts 2:17, 1 Corinthians 12:10, Moroni (LDS 10:13) (RLDS 10:11), D&C (LDS 46:22) (RLDS 46) (1833 49) (1835 16) (1844 16).

According to NAS Exhaustive Concordance RUACH can be translated to the following words: breath, wind, spirit, heart, and mind.

The translation of Ruach to MIND reminds me of what Joseph Smith taught in Lectures on Faith lecture 5 where it states six times in verse 2 that the HOLY SPIRIT is the MIND of GOD. In the Questions and Answers section of lecture 5 it quotes Philippians 2:5 that teaches the same thing in plain English.

Philippians 2:5 Let this MIND be IN you, which was also IN CHRIST JESUS; who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of man, and, being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

As a little side note I believe one of the reasons James E Talmage removed the Lectures on Faith from the Doctrine and Covenants is because following quote from the Questions and Answers from lecture 5 contradicts Doctrine and Covenants section 130 of LDS / Brighamite edition of the Doctrine and Covenats which was not added to it untill 1876, thirty-two years after Joseph Smith was murdered see D&C Compare. Also significant to point out LDS D&C 130 is not in any other edition of the Doctrine and Covenants from any other restoration churches see Doctrine and Covenants – Wikipedia. For those who don’t know LDS D&C 130 is not a revelation, it is sayings that people believe they remembered Joseph Smith teaching, even the LDS summary of the section admits it was not a revelation “Items of instruction given by Joseph Smith the Prophet”. (If the Lectures on Faith were removed because they were not revelations, then why was not LDS D&C 130 also removed for it is not a revelation either?) Contrasted with the Lectures on Faith were is it something that is on record that Joseph Smith taught and put his name.

Question 3: How many personages are there in the Godhead?
Two: the Father and the Son. (5:1)

I have found it pertinent to not believe everything that people claim that Joseph Smith taught for “[his] name should be [used] for good and evil” Joseph Smith-History 1:33. On that note I have issues with all LDS Doctrine and Covenant sections that William Clayton was the supposed scribe for them because they contradict other scriptures, which includes LDS D&C 130. The book The Exoneration of Emma, Joseph & Hyrum: Part One lays out a very good case why we should not trust William Clayton.

The 1835 Doctine and Covenants Preface tells us that the Lectures on Faith is the DOCTRINE of 1835 Doctrine and Covenants. Since it was removed in 1921 from the LDS / Brighamite edition by James E Talmage, which removal left the church with only the covenants.

The first part of the book will be found to contain a series of Lectures as delivered before a Theological class in this place, and in consequence of their embracing the important doctrine of salvation, we have arranged them into the following work.

Joseph Smith had his name attached to the following statement that states he, Joseph Smith, among three others are responsible for what is being taught in the Lectures on Faith.

We do not present this little volume with any other expectation than that we are to be called to answer to every principle advanced, in that day when the secrets of all hearts will be revealed, and the reward of every man’s labor be given him.

Joseph Fielding Smith states that not only did Joseph Smith do the final revision of the Lectures on Faith but also worked on them also. (You can find other quotes like this one at Who Wrote the Lectures on Faith?.)

It was for this school [the School of the Prophets] that the lectures on Faith were prepared and which were delivered to the Elders. The idea has been expressed that Sidney Rigdon wrote these lectures, but they were compiled by a number of the brethren and the Prophet himself had the final revision of them. They contain a great deal of excellent teaching on the principle of faith.

Joseph Smith himself said he worked on the Lectures on Faith.

During the month of January, I [Joseph Smith] was engaged in the school of the Elders, and in preparing the lectures on theology for publication in the book of Doctrine and Covenants, which the committee appointed last September were now compiling.

Willard Richards writes in his history that Joseph was “busily engaged” in November in making “preparations for the School for the Elders, wherein they might be more perfectly instructed in the great things of God” HC 2:169-70.

Unlike now publishing and distributing books back in 1835 was hard and expensive. And one thing that was done in the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants to show the high importance of Lectures on Faith was to use a larger font for the Lectures on Faith than the rest of the book. It is much easier to see the different font sizes with a 1835 Doctine and Covenants replica than these two scanned pages, but you can still see it.

The LDS / Brighamite church states that the HOLY SPIRIT and the HOLY GHOST are same, but at the same time say they are different. Confusing right? It is very confusing. I believe a big part of the problem is that people believe in unconfirmed statements claimed to be from Joseph Spmith that contradict scriptures including the Book of Mormon. It is hard to break away from false traditions, as it is for anyone of any church, especially when leaders perpetuate false traditions from the pulpits and encourage you to trust in the arm of flesh by telling you that they can not lead you astray. Contrast that with what Abinadi says in Mosiah (LDS 15:13) (RLDS 8:46-47) that prophets can and have fallen into transgressions.

Mosiah (LDS 15:13) (RLDS 8:46-47) Yea, and are not the prophets, every one that has opened his mouth to prophesy, THAT HAS NOT FALLEN INTO TRANSGRESSION, I mean all the holy prophets ever since the world began? I say unto you that they are his seed.

In the past the LDS leaders used to say if they contradicted the scriptures that you should not fear being in disagreeing with them. Here is one example.

All that we teach in this Church ought to be couched in the scriptures…We ought to choose our texts from the scriptures, and wherever you have an illustration in the scriptures or a revelation in the Book of Mormon, use it, and do not draw from other sources where you can find it here in these books. We call these the standard Church works because they are standard. If you want to measure truth, measure it by the four standard Church works…If it is not in the standard works, you may well assume that it is speculation. It is man’s own personal opinion, to put it another way; and if it contradicts what is in the scriptures, you may know by that same token that it is not true. This is the standard by which you measure all truth. But if you do not know the standards, you have no adequate measure of truth.

You can find many more quotes like this from the scriptures, Joseph Smith and LDS leaders in this extensive article Cursed Is He That Putteth His Trust In Man.

The Ensign article from June of 1989 titled What is the difference between the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Christ, and the Light of Christ? although well writen and thought out, it does shows this confusion and has errors when checked with the scriptures including the Book of Mormon.

The first paragraph states that the HOLY GHOST has many names, one of them being the HOLY SPIRIT, which I agree with.

At the very beginning of the second paragraph we start running into problems. To quote:

The HOLY GHOST is a personage of spirit and a member of the Godhead.

I know that idea is advocated in LDS D&C 130:22, but it contradicts Lectures on Faith 5, which I just went over is something in print that Joseph Smith taught and holds himself accountable for. Verse 2 of Lectures on Faith 5 is a bit long, but easy to follow and understand. It teaches that there are only two personages in the Godhead, and that the HOLY SPIRIT is the MIND of God.

There are two personages who constitute the great, matchless, governing and supreme power over all things—by whom all things were created and made, that are created and made, whether visible or invisible: whether in heaven, on earth, or in the earth, under the earth, or throughout the immensity of space—They are the Father and the Son
Lectures on Faith 5:2

possessing the same MIND with the Father, which MIND is the HOLY SPIRIT, that bears record of the Father and the Son, and these three are one, or in other words, these three constitute the great, matchless, governing and supreme power over all things: by whom all things were created and made, that were created and made: and these three constitute the Godhead, and are one: The Father and the Son possessing the same MIND, the same WISDOM, GLORY, POWER and FULNESS: Filling all in all—the Son being filled with the fulness of the MIND, glory and power, or, in other words, the SPIRIT, glory and power of the Father—possessing all knowledge and glory, and the same kingdom: sitting at the right hand of power, in the express image and likeness of the Father—a Mediator for man—being filled with the fulness of the MIND of the Father, or, in other words, the SPIRIT of the Father:

“The HOLY SPIRIT, that bears record” from Lectures on Faith 5:2 reminds me of Moses 6:61. Which also shows that Comforter is not a personage.

Moses 6:61 Therefore IT is given to abide in you; the record of heaven; the Comforter; the peaceable things of immortal glory; the truth of all things; THAT which QUICKENETH ALL THINGS, which maketh ALIVE ALL THINGS; THAT which knoweth ALL THINGS, and hath all power according to wisdom, mercy, truth, justice, and judgment.

Moses 6:61 also refutes the idea presented in paragraphs one, three, four and others that the HOLY GHOST or others words the Comforter is not the same as the SPIRIT of TRUTH. Because Moses 6:61 applies descriptions that goes with the LIGHT OF CHRIST to the Comforter which there is no doubt that is another name for the HOLY GHOST. Take a look at D&C (LDS 88:7,11–13) (RLDS 85) (1835 7) (1844 7) and see how these same descriptions are being applied to the LIGHT OF CHRIST.

In the second paragraph Brent Bulloch also claims:

We should speak of the Holy Ghost as a personage as ‘he’ and this other Spirit as ‘it,’ although when we speak of the power or gift of the Holy Ghost we may properly say ‘it.’

There is no Book of Mormon verse I am aware of, and I have tried to find one, that refers to the GIFT of the HOLY GHOST as an IT. I am aware of six passages that refers to the HOLY SPIRIT aka the HOLY GHOST as an IT, I will share two of them here, the other four you will at the bottom of the post.

2 Nephi (LDS 33:2) (RLDS 15:2) But behold, there are many that DARDEN their HEARTS against the HOLY SPIRIT, that IT hath no place in them; wherefore, they cast many things away which are written and esteem them as things of naught.

2 Nephi (LDS 32:5) (RLDS 14:6) For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and RECEIVE the HOLY GHOST, IT will SHOW unto you all things what ye SHOULD DO.

On top of that there is no modern day revelation through Joseph Smith that refer to the HOLY SPIRIT / HOLY GHOST as a “he”. Even LDS D&C 130, which I personally do not believe in, does not apply “he” to IT. If you look at Moses 6:61 which I quoted just above, you will see it referencing the HOLY SPIRIT multiple ways including IT and THAT. Also if you were paying attention earlier when I quoted Numbers 11, verses 17 and 25 reference SPIRIT [RUACH] as IT. The only scriptures that I am aware of that uses “he” for the HOLY SPIRIT is from the New Testament which is because of translations errors.

Near the end of the Ensign article the following is stated:

The gift of the HOLY GHOST is the right or blessing extended to those who are baptized whereby they may enjoy the companionship and ministration of the HOLY GHOST as long as they are faithful.

In general I have no issue with that statement. But I do have problems with how far LDS doctrine and members take this to mean, that people who are not members of their church don’t receive much inspiration from God and when they do it’s to help them know that their church is true. Lets take a look at Mosiah (LDS 18:10) (RLDS 9:41) to better understand why I have an issue with that.

Mosiah (LDS 18:10) (RLDS 9:41) Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being BAPTIZED in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may POUR out his SPIRIT MORE ABUNDANTLY upon you?

Did you notice that, MORE ABUNDANTLY. The only way the Lord could share His SPIRIT MORE ABUNDANTLY after baptism is if He had shared His SPIRIT with you abundantly before being baptized. Otherwise how could it be MORE ABUNDANTLY after baptism?

Mosiah (LDS 18) (RLDS 12:62-125) has some important points to ponder. Such as where did Alma the elder get authority to baptize? This is such an important part of the covenant we make before we are baptized “to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort” Mosiah (LDS 18:9) (RLDS 9:40) we as a people really need to get better at that. The verse I just quoted, Mosiah (LDS 18:10) (RLDS 9:41), illustrates that we are to enter a covenant with God before we are baptized. I’ll end on this one, as this is not the main subject of this post, but in Mosiah (LDS 18:8) (RLDS 9:38-39) states “here are the waters of Mormon”, this is wonderful example of PaRDeS, four levels of meanings in the scriptures (see Bishops are JUDGEs of Israel for more regarding PaRDeS), the simplest level is very obvious that was the name of the water, a deeper level takes into account that Mormon actually means covenant and everyone is about to be baptized with water as a witness that they have entered into a covenant with God (regarding Mormon meaning covenant see Why Did Mormon Introduce Himself in 3 Nephi 5?, THE MEANING OF THE NAME “MORMON”, What Does “Mormon” Mean, Anyways?, Mormon (word)).

I also want to bring up how God defines His church Himself as recorded in the scriptures.

D&C (LDS 10:67-69) (RLDS 3) (1833 9) (1835 36) (1844 36)
67 Behold, this is my doctrine—whosoever REPENTETH and COMETH UNTO ME, the same IS MY CHURCH. 68 Whosoever declareth more or less than this, the same is not of me, but is against me; therefore he is not of my church. 69 And now, behold, whosoever is of my church, and endureth of my church to the end, him will I establish upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.

Mosiah (LDS 26:22) (RLDS 11:126-130) For behold, THIS IS MY CHURCH; WHOSOEVER IS BAPTIZED SHALL BE BAPTIZED UNTO REPENTANCE. And whomsoever ye receive shall BELIEVE IN MY NAME; and him will I freely forgive.

On thing that I know for sure is that the HOLY SPIRIT / HOLY GHOST is not Heartsell® which is a trademarked process owned by Bonneville International, a communications company owned by the LDS / Brighamite church. Joseph Smith taught that the effect of the HOLY SPIRIT is none other than pure intellegance, not emotions.

This first Comforter or HOLY GHOST has no other effect than pure intelligence. It is more powerful in expanding the mind, enlightening the understanding, and storing the intellect with present knowledge, of a man who is of the literal seed of Abraham, than one that is a Gentile though it may not have half as much visual effect upon his body; for as the HOLY GHOST falls upon one of the literal seed of Abraham, it is calm and serene; and his whole soul and body are only exercised by the pure spirit of intelligence; while the effect of the HOLY GHOST upon a Gentile, is to purge out the old blood, and make him actually of the seed of Abraham. That man that has none of the blood of Abraham (naturally) must have new creation by the HOLY GHOST.

The HOLY SPIRIT works by teaching us and bringing things to our rememberance not by our feelings. Feelings can be and are being manipluated against us, such is the case with Heartsell®. Lets see if Joseph Smith’s quote about the HOLY SPIRIT giving intelligence has any bearings on what happened with Nephi in 1 Nephi (LDS 4:5-18) (RLDS 1:104-120). In 1 Nephi (LDS 4:11-17) (RLDS 1:112-119) the Spirit taught Nephi and things came to his rememberance. In addition to that, Nephi used reasoned and tested what he was being told to do with the scriptures and previous revelations from the Lord. (Please see Bishops are JUDGEs of Israel and The Book of Mormon and the Law of Moses Episode 1 Part 1 for additional explaination.)

1 Nephi (LDS 4:11-17) (RLDS 1:112-119)
11 And the Spirit said unto me again: Behold the LORD HATH DELIVERED HIM INTO THY HANDS. Yea, and I also knew that he had SOUGHT TO TAKE AWAY MINE OWN LIFE; yea, and he WOULD NOT HEARKEN UNTO THE COMMANDMETNS OF THE LORD; and he also HAD TAKEN AWAY OUR PROPERTY. 12 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for THE LORD HATH DELIEVERED HIM INTO THY HANDS; 13 Behold the LORD SLAYETH THE WICKED TO BRING FORTH HIS RIGHTEOUS PRUPOSES. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief. 14 And now, when I, Nephi, had heard these words, I REMEMBERED THE WORDS OF THE LORD which he spake unto me in the wilderness, saying that: Inasmuch as thy seed shall keep my commandments, they shall prosper in the land of promise. 15 Yea, and I also thought that they could not keep the commandments of the Lord according to the law of Moses, save they should have the law. 16 And I also knew that the law was engraven upon the plates of brass. 17 And again, I knew that the Lord had delivered Laban into my hands for this cause—that I might obtain the records according to his commandments.

I have not forgotten about Galatians 5:22-23. Keep it mind it says the fruit of the SPIRIT and not the seed. The seed is the intelligence that Joseph Smith talked about. What we know and how we think about things will determine what kinds of emotions that will result from information we learn and experiences we have. Don’t forget that Nephi in 1 Nephi (LDS 4:10) (RLDS 1:110-111) is an example that some things God tells us is not always easy to accept at first.

Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the SPIRIT is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Regarding feelings we should remember our hearts are deceitful. God’s laws teach us how to be like Jesus Christ. And that man’s ways are not God’s ways. The scriptures are full of examples of mankind falling short of God’s glorious ways. But if we will listen and obey He will extend mercy.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Alma (LDS 5:43) (RLDS 3:71-72) And now, my brethren, I would that ye should hear me, for I speak in the energy of my soul; for behold, I have spoken unto you PLAINLY that ye cannot err, OR have spoken ACCORDING to the COMMANDMENTS OF GOD.

Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

2 Nephi (LDS 2:3) (RLDS 1:62-63) Wherefore, thy soul shall be blessed, and thou shalt dwell safely with thy brother, Nephi; and thy days shall be spent in the service of thy God. Wherefore, I know that thou art redeemed, because of the righteousness of thy Redeemer; for thou hast beheld that in the fulness of time he cometh to bring salvation unto men.

In one of Nephi’s last pleas and warnings that he gives us in the Book of Mormon, he talks about the importance of HOLY SPIRIT, not leaders, in knowing what to do after we are baptized.

2 Nephi (LDS 32:3-5) (RLDS 14:3-6)
3 Angels speak by the power of the HOLY GHOST; wherefore, they speak the WORDS OF CHRIST. Wherefore, I said unto you, FEAST upon the words of Christ; for behold, THE WORDS OF CHRIST WILL TELL YOU ALL THINGS WHAT YE SHOULD DO. 4 Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not, neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark. 5 For behold, AGAIN I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the HOLY GHOST, IT WILL SHOW UNTO YOU ALL THINGS WHAT YE SHOULD DO.

Did you notice the ALL THINGS WHAT YE SHOULD DO was applied to both the words of Christ and the HOLY GHOST? What do you think that means?

A couple verses later Nephi brings up the importance of the commandments of God.

2 Nephi (LDS 32:7) (RLDS 14:9) And now I, Nephi, cannot say more; the SPIRIT stoppeth mine utterance, and I am left to mourn because of the unbelief, and the wickedness, and the ignorance, and the stiffneckedness of men; for they will not search knowledge, nor understand great knowledge, when it is given unto them in PLAINNESS, even as PLAIN as word can be.

Please take note that Alma defines PLAIN in Alma (LDS 5:43) (RLDS 3:71-72) as the COMMANDMENTS OF GOD.

We will not always feel comfortable with everything that God tells us to do, as mentioned earlier, in 1 Nephi (LDS 4:10) (RLDS 1:110-111) we can see that Nephi did not feel peaceful when the Spirit constrained him to execute the punishment of the broken law upon Laban. (Please see Bishops are JUDGEs of Israel and The Book of Mormon and the Law of Moses Episode 1 Part 1 for explainations.)

We need to be diligent in testing all ideas that come into our heads with the scriptures for not everything that pops into our head is from God.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

There have also been ministering angels in the church which were of satan appearing as an angel of light:— A sister in the State of New York had a vision who said it was told her that if she would go to a certain place in the woods an angel would appear to her,— she went at the appointed time and saw a glorious personage descending arrayed in white … he commenced and told her to fear God and said that her husband was called to do great things, but that he must not go more than one hundred miles from home or he would not return; whereas God had called him to go to the ends of the earth; and he has since been more than one thousand miles from home, and is yet alive. Many true things were spoken by this personage and many things that were false.—How it may be asked was this known to be a bad angel? … by his contradicting a former revelation.

Denver Snuffer has stated on his blog and the movement that he started official glossary states that the HOLY SPIRIT and the HOLY GHOST are different. For example here is one excerpt:

This is a description of the personage of spirit that dwells inside each person. This is the holy ghost. This is something that can be in contact with the holy spirit, or the mind of the Father and Son.

Just to make sure we are all on the same page regarding the Godhead here is a quote from the Lectures on Faith taught by Joseph Smith on the subject.

And he [the SON] being the only begotten of the FATHER, full of grace and truth, and having overcome, received a fulness of the glory of the FATHER—possessing the same mind with the FATHER, which mind is the HOLY SPIRIT, that bears record of the FATHER and the SON, and these THREE ARE ONE, or in other words, these three constitute the great, matchless, governing and supreme power over all things: by whom all things were created and made, that were created and made: and these three constitute the GODHEAD, and are ONE: … the FATHER, SON, and HOLY SPIRIT are ONE.
Joseph Smith, Lectures on Faith 5:2, 1835 Doctrine and Covenants

From this we can see that the Godhead consists of the FATHER, the SON, and the HOLY SPIRIT (which is also known as the HOLY GHOST).

Next I want to look at two verses on the Godhead from the Book of Mormon. The first one using the translation of HOLY SPIRIT and the second one using the translation of HOLY GHOST.

Alma (LDS 11:44) (RLDS 8:102-104) Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the HOLY SPIRIT, which is ONE Eternal GOD, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil.

Mormon (LDS 7:7) (RLDS 3:39) And he hath brought to pass the redemption of the world, whereby he that is found guiltless before him at the judgment day hath it given unto him to dwell in the presence of God in his kingdom, to sing ceaseless praises with the choirs above, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the HOLY GHOST, which are ONE GOD, in a state of happiness which hath no end.

After looking at these verses I see a couple options. One that the HOLY SPIRIT and the HOLY GHOST are simply different translations of Ruach HaKodesh thus different English names for the same thing. Two there are four in the Godhead instead of only three. Or three there are two different Godheads. I hope and believe that any logical person familiar with the scriptures would say the answer is obviously option one.

In addition to Alma (LDS 11:44) (RLDS 8:102-104) stating the HOLY SPIRIT is part of the Godhead and the four verses stating the HOLY GHOST is part of the Godhead (see blow under GODHEAD for the additional four verses), I have found two chiasmuses in the Book of Mormon were HOLY SPIRIT and HOLY GHOST are in the same stanzas but on opposite ends of the chiasmus. One thing that occures with chiasmuses in Hebrew scriptures is saying the same thing a different way or adding additional details. I honestly believe that is what is going on in the stanzas below espically considering all the simularities of how these two translations as used in the Book of Mormon (see list below). I am only going to include the relevant stanzas in this article simply to save space, but I hope you are inclined to see the whole chiasmuses by clicking on the provided links.

Alma (LDS 13) (RLDS 10) Chiasmus (I identified up to stanza I)
–C 12 Now they, after being sanctified by the HOLY GHOST, having their garments made white, being pure and spotless before God, could not look upon sin save it were with abhorrence; and there were many, exceedingly great many, who were made pure and entered into the rest of the Lord their God.
–C 28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the HOLY SPIRIT, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering;

Moroni (LDS 8:23-28) (RLDS 8:27-33) Chiasmus (I identified up to stanzas C)
A 23 But it is mockery before GOD, DENYING the mercies of Christ, and the power of his HOLY SPIRIT, and putting trust in dead works.
A 28 Pray for them, my son, that repentance may come unto them. But behold, I fear lest the SPIRIT hath ceased striving with them; and in this part of the land they are also seeking to put down all power and authority which cometh from GOD; and they are DENYING the HOLY GHOST.

I hope from these scriptures you can see that the HOLY SPIRIT and the HOLY GHOST are the same thing and are only different translations of the same Hebrew word RUACH.

The patterns with Shavuot/Pentecost are important in understading what the HOLY SPIRIT / HOLY GHOST is. When most people think of Exodus 19-20, a Shavuot experience, they think about Moses receiving the 10 commandments. When people think about Acts 2, which was Pentecost a Greek word meaning fifty, they think about the SPIRIT being given to the church. Both of these events are of the same High Holiday that God commanded us to keep in Leviticus 23:15-16 known as Shavuot or Pentecost.

Leviticus 23:15-16
15 And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete: 16 Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the Lord.

When I read 3 Nephi (LDS 11-26) (RLDS 5-12:13) I see the same High Holiday being celebrated. I see the Jesus Christ explaining how to keep the law with the speach known as the Sermon at the Temple 3 Nephi (LDS 12-14) (RLDS 5:44-6:37). I also see the SPIRIT being given to the believers of Jesus Christ in 3 Nephi (LDS 11-26) (RLDS 5-12:13).

Another very interesting point is how 3 Nephi (LDS 11-26) (RLDS 5-12:13) is another Shavuot/Pentecost experience deals with 3 Nephi (LDS 26:13) (RLDS 12:6).

3 Nephi (LDS 26:13) (RLDS 12:6) … the Lord truly did teach the people, for the space of three days …

According to John Welch, recent scholarship has shown that ancient Israelites may have celebrated, as part of Shavuot/Pentecost, the giving of the law to Moses and the revelation of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai for three days.

In addition, Shavuot (Pentecost) was a day for remembering great spiritual manifestations. Thus, the HOLY GHOST was manifest as tongues of fire to the saints gathered for Pentecost that same year in Jerusalem (see Acts 2:1-4). Shavuot came to be associated with the day on which the Lord came down in smoke and flame on Mount Sinai and appeared to Moses on behalf of the host of Israel. Now Jesus had come down and appeared to all gathered in Bountiful. Indeed, the ancient model for Shavuot was the three day ritual the Israelites observed before the law was given at Sinai (see Exodus 19:15), and Jesus similarly “did teach the [Nephites] for the space of three days” (3 Nephi 26:13; see also 11:1-8; 19:4-15). Thus, while the suggestion that Jesus appeared at Bountiful on Shavuot or any other particular holy day remains tentative, the choice of Shavuot is attractive and symbolically meaningful.

Keep in mind that 3 Nephi (LDS 11-26) (RLDS 5-12:13) happened after Jesus Christ’s resurrection showing that God’s High Holidays in Leviticus 23 were not done away with and still should be practiced “throughout your generations” see Leviticus 23:14,21,31,41,43.

In 2 Nephi (LDS 2:28) (RLDS 1:122-123), Lehi associated WILL with the HOLY SPIRIT.

2 Nephi (LDS 2:28) (RLDS 1:122-123) And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the WILL of his HOLY SPIRIT;

I want to remind you real quick that Lectures on Faith 5:2 defines the HOLY SPIRIT, as the MIND of the Father.

I want to look at some defintions of mind from the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary.

MIND, noun [… mind signifies properly intention, a reaching or inclining forward to an object, from the primary sense of extending, stretching or inclining, or advancing eagerly, pushing or setting forward, … in analogy with the Teutonic mod, moed, muth, mind courage, spirit, mettle. So Latin animus, animosus.]
1. Intention; purpose; design. Proverbs 21:27 The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination; how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind.
2. Inclination; will; desire; a sense much used, but expressing less than settled purpose; as in the common phrases, ‘I wish to know your mind; ‘ ‘let me know your mind; ‘ ‘he had a mind to go; ‘ ‘he has a partner to his mind ‘

MIND not high things. Romans 12:2.
1. To attend to or regard with submission; to obey. His father told him to desist, but he would not mind him.

MIND, verb intransitive To be inclined or disposed to incline.

MIND, 1828 Webster’s Dictionary

Right now I want to focus on WILL from definition 2 in the noun portion. Interesting enough Moroni (LDS 7:2) (RLDS 7:2) includes the HOLY WILL as part of the Godhead.

Moroni (LDS 7:2) (RLDS 7:2) And now I, Mormon, speak unto you, my beloved brethren; and it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, and his HOLY WILL, because of the gift of his calling unto me, that I am permitted to speak unto you at this time.

I have found that the Webster’s Dictionary from 1828 is very helpful for understanding what the prophets in the Book of Mormon are saying. One reason being that words in the English language have changed their meanings from when the Book of Mormon was translated to now. In addition it is a reminder of the not so common definitions of words we use all the time. When I read through the definitions of SPIRIT from the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary, I see two ideas that come up multiple times and they are BEHAVIOR and our spiritual bodies sometimes referred to as the soul. The BEHAVIOR of Godly people is HOLY, or in others words set apart and different from than that of the world.

This new understanding of the RUACH has opened my eyes to many new things and has cleared up questions I’ve had about various doctrines. I hope to expound more upon these in a future post.

Before I finish up I want to call attention to Moroni (LDS 3:4) (RLDS 3:3) which states people are ordained to their callings by the POWER of the HOLY GHOST and not by the priesthood.

Moroni (LDS 3:4) (RLDS 3:3) And after this manner did they ordain priests and teachers, according to the gifts and CALLINGS of God unto men; and they ORDAINED them BY the POWER of the HOLY GHOST, which was in them.

If you have issues with things I have said in this post simply because I do not have a calling in your church, I would have you reflect upon these words, 1 Nephi (LDS 10:22) (RLDS 3:36), from Nephi that he said to encourage others to listen to him. Please take note he is not mentioning his calling from God, or his position in a church, or his leadership role, or his high civil responsibility, Nephi is only bring up the fact that the HOLY GHOST has given him authority to say what he has said, not the priesthood. After all didn’t Moroni reminded us that “by the power of the HOLY GHOST ye may know the truth of all things” Moroni (LDS 10: 5) (RLDS 10:5).

1 Nephi (LDS 10:22) (RLDS 3:36) And the HOLY GHOST giveth authority that I should speak these things, and deny them not.

We should be teaching people to rely on the scriptures and the HOLY SPIRIT for truth and not to rely on any man including ourselves for truth. For one, the HOLY GHOST can always be with those who want it and do what is right, we can not be. In addition we are flawed and are still learning.

Below is a list of sixteen concepts I found connected with both the HOLY SPIRIT and the HOLY GHOST alike (perhaps because it is the second baptism 🙂 ). Which I hope by now you can see why I say they are the same thing and a different translation of the same Hebrew word.

CALL

Alma (LDS 18:34) (RLDS 12:112) Ammon said unto him: I am a man; and man in the beginning was created after the image of God, and I am CALLED by his HOLY SPIRIT to TEACH these things unto this people, that they may be brought to a knowledge of that which is just and true;

Moroni (LDS 3:4) (RLDS 3:3) And after this manner did they ordain priests and teachers, according to the gifts and CALLINGS of God unto men; and they ordained them by the POWER of the HOLY GHOST, which was in them.

DENY

Jacob (LDS 6:8) (RLDS 4:12-13) Behold, will ye REJECT these words? Will ye REJECT the words of the prophets; and will ye REJECT all the words which have been spoken concerning Christ, after so many have spoken concerning him; and DENY the good word of Christ, and the POWER of God, and the GIFT of the HOLY GHOST and QUENCH [repress] the HOLY SPIRIT, and make a MOCK of the great PLAN of REDEMPTION, which hath been laid for you?
