Translator Bias with Spirit or Ghost

Some people believe that the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost are two different things. I hope to show conclusively from the Greek New Testament interlinear based on Greek New Testament manuscripts, that the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost is simply translator bias by showing that the Greek root words for the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost are exactly the same in every case.

There are multiple issues I will not be dealing with in this post, such as Joseph Smith’s New Translation / JST / Inspired Version of the Bible which YHWH Elohim commanded Joseph Smith to do. This is documented in many Doctrine and Covenants passages which I have listed in The JST / Inspired Version and Only a Part. I will not be dealing with various translation issues, nor will I deal with how the Holy Spirit / Ghost is an IT not a HE in this post. You can learn more about that at Modalism. This post is about primarly the Greek words behind Holy Spirit / Ghost and some about the Hebrew words behind them.

First lets look at the Greek root word “G0040: Hagios” which is translated to holy in English along with it’s various modifications. Definitions of Greek root word “G0040: Hagios” goes along very well with behavior which is what many definitions of spirit point to, see Modalism.

BibleHub, G0040: hagios:
Lexical Summary:
hagios: Holy, sacred, set apart
Part of Speech: Adjective
KJV: (most) holy (one, thing), saint
NASB: Holy, saints, holy place, holy one, sanctuary, Holy of Holies
Word Origin: from hagos “an awful thing”
Definition:
1) sacred
2) (physically) pure
3) (morally) blameless

40 hágios – properly, different (unlike), other (“otherness”), holy; for the believer, 40 (hágios) means “likeness of nature with the Lord” because “different from the world.”
The fundamental (core) meaning of 40 (hágios) is “different” – thus a temple in the 1st century was hagios (“holy”) because different from other buildings (Wm. Barclay). In the NT, 40 /hágios (“holy”) has the “technical” meaning “different from the world” because “like the Lord.”
[40 (hágios) implies something “set apart” and therefore “different (distinguished/distinct)” – i.e. “other,” because special to the Lord.]
NAS Exhaustive Concordance:

NASB Translation: Holy (92), holy (62), Holy of Holies (1), holy one (5), holy ones (1), holy place (7), most holy (1), saint (1), saints (59), saints’ (1), sanctuary (2).

3) prepared for God [Elohim] with solemn rite, pure, clean

Since the New Testament is built upon the Tanak / Old Testament, it is important to look at the Hebrew word for holy which is “H6944: qodesh“.

BibleHub, H6944: qodesh:

qodesh: Holiness, sacredness, sanctuary

Now lets look at the English word that both the Greek word “G0040: Hagios” and the Hebrew word “H6944: qodesh” gets translated to, holy.

1828 Webster’s Dictionary, HOLY:
adjective)
1) Properly, whole, entire or perfect, in a moral sense. Hence, pure in heart, temper or dispositions; free from sin and sinful affections. Applied to the Supreme Being, holy signifies perfectly pure, immaculate and complete in moral character; and man is more or less holy as his heart is more or less sanctified, or purified from evil dispositions. We call a man holy when his heart is conformed in some degree to the image of God, and his life is regulated by the divine precepts. Hence, holy is used as nearly synonymous with good, pious, godly.
2) Hallowed; consecrated or set apart to a sacred use, or to the service or worship of God; a sense frequent in Scripture; as the holy sabbath; holy oil; holy vessels; a holy nation; the holy temple; a holy priesthood.
3) Proceeding from pious principles, or directed to pious purposes; as holy zeal.
4) Perfectly just and good; as the holy law of God.
5) Sacred; as a holy witness.
Extra) Holy Ghost, or holy Spirit, the Divine Spirit; the third person [mind or will see Modalism] in the Trinity [Godhead see Modalism]; the sanctifier of souls [see Justification and Sanctification].

We are commanded to be holy as YHWH is holy. When YHWH is commanding us to be holy, He is telling us how to act, which is our behavior.

Leviticus 11:45
A For I am the Lord [YHWH]
-B that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt [wickedness],
–C to be your God [Elohim]:
-B ye shall therefore be holy,
A for I [YHWH] am holy.

Leviticus 19:2
AA Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel,
AB and say unto them, Ye shall be holy:
BB for I the Lord [YHWH] your God [Elohenu]
BA am holy.

Leviticus 20:26
AA And ye shall be holy unto Me [YHWH]:
AB for I the Lord [YHWH] am holy,
BA and have severed [set apart] you from other people,
BB that ye should be Mine [YHWH].

Before you go and say that is antiquated (out dated) teaching, Peter is teaching that in SJR 1 Peter 1:15, after Yeshua’s / Jesus’ death and resurrection.

SJR 1 Peter 1:15
A But as He [Yeshua] which hath called you is holy,
B so shall ye be holy in all your [G0391: behavior].

The very next verse, Peter paraphrases passages from the five books of Moses, which is full of Torah, for the reason to have a holy behavior (spirit).

1 Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I [YHWH] am holy.

John taught the same thing after Yeshua’s / Jesus’ death and resurrection in the New Testament, stating we are to keep Torah as Yeshua / Jesus kept Torah.

1 John 2:3-6
AA 3 And hereby we do know
AB that we know Him [Yeshua],
AC IF we keep His [Yeshua] commandments [Torah].
-BA 4 He that saith, I know Him [Yeshua],
-BB and keepeth not His [Yeshua] commandments [Torah],
-BC is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
-BA 5 But whoso keepeth His [Yeshua] word [Torah],

-BC hereby know we that we are in Him [Yeshua].
AA 6 He that saith he abideth in Him [Yeshua]
AB ought himself also so to walk [act / behavior],
AC even as He [Yeshua] walked [Torah].

Next we should look at the Greek root word for spirit and ghost which is “G4151: Pneuma“. In Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance it explicity states that “G4151: Pneuma” can be translated as spirit or ghost, which will be shown at the end of the post with a list of scriptures.

Compare psuche.
HELPS Word-studies:
4151 pneúma – properly, spirit (Spirit), wind, or breath. The most frequent meaning (translation) of 4151 (pneúma) in the NT is “spirit” (“Spirit”). Only the context however determines which sense(s) is meant.
[Any of the above renderings (spirit-Spirit, wind, breath) of 4151 (pneúma) is always theoretically possible (spirit, Spirit, wind, breath). But when the attributive adjective (“holy”) is used, it always refers to the Holy Spirit. “Spirit” (“spirit”) is by far the most common translation (application) of 4151 (pneúma).
The Hebrew counterpart (rûach) has the same range of meaning as 4151 (pneúma), i.e. it likewise can refer to spirit/Spirit, wind, or breath.]
NAS Exhaustive Concordance:
Definition: wind, spirit
NASB Translation: breath (3), Spirit (241), spirit (101), spirits (32), spiritual (1), wind (1), winds (1).

1b) breath, the breath of life
2) the spirit, i.e. the vital principle by which the body is animated [soul]; the rational spirit, the power by which a human being feels, thinks, wills, decides; the soul

Just as we looked at the Hebrew word for the Greek root word “G0040: Hagios“, we are going to look at the Hebrew word “H7307: ruach:” which goes along with the Greek word “G4151: pneuma“. Notice how they both mean spirit, wind breath. Showing the Holy Spirit is not something new in the New Testament. What is more obvious with the definition of the Hebrew word “H7307: ruach:” than it is with the Greek word “G4151: pneuma“, is it’s connection to people’s behavior. One definition actually states will, which goes with the Holy Spirit being the mind and will of YHWH Elohim with goes with Modalism and I will talk more about that latter.

To get the full picture of why the Greek word “G4151: pneuma” and the Hebrew word “H7307: ruach:” are translated to English spirit, we need to look at the definition of spirit.

Here are most of the definitions of spirit in the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary. I am listing the defititions that teach behavior separately to make them more obvious, because they are very important in understanding what the Holy Spirit actually is, which is Torah (see Modalism). As you read through the following definitions of spirit, please take notice of the similar definitions to the Greek word “G4151: Pneuma” and the Hebrew word “H7307: ruach:“. To help show the bias of translations between spirit or ghost, definition 19 is ghost.

21) The influences of the Holy spirit Matthew 22:43.

Below are definitions of spirit that deal with behavior going with the statement from YHWH Elohim that He wants us to act, or behave, holy.

1828 Webster’s Dictionary, SPIRIT:
noun)
2) Animal excitement, or the effect of it; life; ardor; fire; courage; elevation or vehemence of mind. The troops attacked the enemy with great spirit The young man has the spirit of youth. 20) The renewed nature of man. Matthew 26:41. Galatians 5:5.

King James Bible translators translated the Greek word “G4151: pneuma” into ghost because of an inncorrect understanding of the Godhead. For more information see my page Modalism. In that they believed that the third member of the Godhead was a person instead of the will of YHWH Elohim, which we will be going over shortly. The reason ghost and spirit were used interchangably in translations is because both have definitions meaning the soul of man.

1828 Webster’s Dictionary, GHOST:
noun)
1) Spirit; the soul of man.
2) The soul of a deceased person; the soul or spirit separate from the body; an apparition.

Lectures on Faith 5: Godhead makes it clear the third member of the Godhead is the mind or will of YHWH Elohim, which is Torah.

2 … And he being the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, and having overcome, received a fulness of the glory of the Father—possessing the same mind with the Father, which mind is the Holy Spirit, that bears record of the Father and the Son, and these three are one, or in other words, these three constitute the great, matchless, governing and supreme power over all things: by whom all things were created and made, that were created and made: and these three constitute the Godhead, and are one: The Father and the Son possessing the same mind, the same wisdom, glory, power and fulness: Filling all in all—the Son being filled with the fulness of the Mind, glory and power, or, in other words, the Spirit, glory and power of the Father—possessing all knowledge and glory, and the same kingdom: sitting at the right hand of power, in the express image and likeness of the Father—a Mediator for man—being filled with the fulness of the Mind of the Father, or, in other words, the Spirit of the Father: which Spirit is shed forth upon all who believe on his name and keep his commandments: and all those who keep his commandments shall grow up from grace to grace, and become heirs of the heavenly kingdom, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ; possessing the same mind, being transformed into the same image or likeness, even the express image of him who fills all in all: being filled with the fulness of his glory, and become one in him, even as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one.

Q 13: Do the Father and the Son possess the same mind?
A 13: They do. John 5:30: I [Christ] can of my own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me. John 6:38: For I [Christ] came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me. John 10:30: I [Christ] and my Father are one.

Q 14: What is this mind?
A 14: The Holy Spirit. John 15:26: But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceeds from the Father, he shall testify of me. [Christ] Galatians 4:6: And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts.

Lectures on Faith 5: Godhead

The New Testament also teaches that the Spirit is the mind and will of YHWH Elohim.

If you take time to click on the links in the verse references of the list of scriptures at the end of the article, you will start seeing inconsistencies with the Greek root words “G0040: Hagios” translated to Holy and “G4151: pneuma” translated to Spirit or Ghost. One difference is the order of the two words. Another being how the Greek root words are modified. There is also differences in if there is a word between the two words or not, in addition what word is between them. If Holy Spirit / Ghost was a name of a soul, which it’s not, why all these variations? It’s not a name of a soul, there are all these differences because these words are describing Torah and English translations are simplying the Greek text and hiding all these nuances from us that gives a fuller picture in how the Holy Spirit / Ghost is talking about a holy behavior or in other words Torah. Below are some verses to show these changes. I encourage you to look at more on your own.

In the Tanak / Old Testament the holy prophets almost exclusively used the Hebrew word “H7307: ruach:” which is translated into English as Spirit instead of the Hebrew prase “H6944: qodesh H7307: ruach” which is Holy Spirit in English. In the Tanak / Old Testament there are a three instances of Holy Spirit. Something happened between the Tanak / Old Testament and the New Testament that made Holy Spirit more popular. Perhaps because of the influence of other cultures, it became nessary to distinguish between YHWH’s holy spirit / behavior and an evil spirit / behavior. Just as today we will say a false prophet as it is said in the New Testament eleven times, but that phrase is no where in the Tanak / Old Testament. In the Tanak / Old Testament the holy prophets would describe their wicked actions to bring out how they were a false prophet, or what they said was not from YHWH Elohim. For some reason this changed from the Tanak / Old Testament to the New Testament, perhaps because it was easier. The same idea is being said just in a different way.

Psalm 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy [H6944: qodesh] spirit [H7307: ruach] from me.

Isaiah 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy [H6944: qodesh] Spirit [H7307: ruach]: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

Isaiah 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy [H6944: qodesh] Spirit [H7307: ruach] within him?

Before we continue, I want to bring out how Torah is to be written on our hearts. Below are verses from the Tanak / Old Testament and New Testament that teaches this truth.

Deuteronomy 6:6
A 6 And these words [verse 1: commandments + statutes + judgements = Torah] [from YHWH],

Below is the support for my SJR Translation of Romans 2:14-15. I’m simply using different definitions of words that does not pin one passage of YHWH’s word against another. It is important to do that because YHWH does not turn to the left or to the right or in other words, YHWH’s ways do not change.

The fact that we are to write Torah upon our hearts, and how Torah teaches us how we are to behave holy as YHWH is holy, it is only logical to see the Holy Spirit / Ghost as another name for Torah. Which makes the following passages from the New Testament very clear because it’s simply another way of saying Torah is to be on your heart.

Acts 7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy [G0040: Hagios] Ghost [G4151: Pneuma]: as your fathers did, so do ye.

Acts 15:8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy [G0040: Hagios] Ghost [G4151: Pneuma], even as he did unto us;

Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy [G0040: Hagios] Ghost [G4151: Pneuma] which is given unto us.

2 Corinthians 1:22
A 22 Who [Yeshua] hath also sealed us,
-B and given the earnest of the Spirit [G4151: Pneuma]
A in our hearts.

2 Corinthians 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ [Messiah] ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit [G4151: Pneuma] of the living God [Elohim]; not in tables of stone [Torah], but in fleshy tables of the heart.

Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons [followers], God [Elohim] hath sent forth the Spirit [G4151: Pneuma] of His [YHWH] Son [Yeshua] into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father [YHWH].

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God [Elohim] is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit [G4151: Pneuma] [behavior], and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner [dividing the good from the evil defined in Torah] of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The holy prophets of YHWH Elohim in the Book of Mormon, who studied the Old Testament / Tanak including first five books of Moses among writings of other prophets see 1 Nephi (LDS 5:10-13; 19:21-24) (RLDS 1:158-163; 5:262-6:7), also taught that the Holy Spirit which is Torah should be written on our hearts.

2 Nephi (LDS 33:2) (RLDS 14:2-3) But behold, there are many that harden their hearts against the Holy Spirit, that it hath no place in them; wherefore, they cast many things away which are written and esteem them as things of naught.

Mosiah (LDS 5:2) (RLDS 3:2-3) And they all cried with one voice, saying: Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us; and also, we know of their surety and truth, because of the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.

Alma (LDS 16:16) (RLDS 11:26) And there was no inequality among them; the Lord [YHWH] did pour out His [YHWH] Spirit [behavior / Torah] on all the face of the land to prepare the minds of the children of men, or to prepare their hearts to receive the word [Torah] which should be taught among them at the time of His [Yeshua] coming-

Alma (LDS 32:28) (RLDS 16:152-154) Now, we will compare the word [Torah] unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true [correct] seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit [behavior / Torah] of the Lord [YHWH], behold, it [Torah] will begin to swell within your breasts [where the lungs and heart are]; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves-It [Torah] must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word [Torah] is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

Helaman (LDS 5:45) (RLDS 2:111) And behold, the Holy Spirit [Torah] of God [Elohim] did come down from heaven, and did enter into their hearts, and they were filled as if with fire, and they could speak forth marvelous words.

Helaman (LDS 6:35) (RLDS 2:162) And thus we see that the Spirit [behavior] of the Lord [YHWH] began to withdraw from the Nephites, because of the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts.

Moroni (LDS 7:32) (RLDS 7:2) And by so doing, the Lord [YHWH] God [Elohim] prepareth the way that the residue of men may have faith [trust and diligence] in Christ [Messiah], that the Holy Ghost [Torah] may have place in their hearts, according to the power thereof; and after this manner bringeth to pass the Father [YHWH], the covenants which He [YHWH] hath made unto the children of men.

Moroni (LDS 8:26) (RLDS 8:29) And the remission of sins bringeth meekness [keeping Torah], and lowliness of heart; and because of meekness and lowliness of heart cometh the visitation of the Holy Ghost [Torah], which Comforter [Torah] filleth with hope and perfect love [Torah tells us how to love YHWH and others including ourselves perfectly], which love endureth by diligence unto prayer, until the end shall come, when all the saints [sanctified] shall dwell with God [Elohim].

YHWH Elohim reiterated again in recent days, through the holy prophet Joseph Smith, as recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants, that the Holy Spirit / Ghost, which is Torah, is to be written on our hearts.

Got Questions has a good explaination why the King James transaltors used Holy Spirit sometimes and Holy Ghost other times, at What is the difference between the Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost?, and how modern translations prefer Spirit over Ghost as I do also.

Of the modern English translations of the Bible, it is only the King James Version of the Bible which uses the term “Holy Ghost.” It occurs 90 times in the KJV. The term “Holy Spirit” occurs 7 times in the KJV. There is no clear reason as to why the KJV translators used Ghost in most places and then Spirit in a few. The exact same Greek and Hebrew words are translated “ghost” and “spirit” in the KJV in different occurrences of the words. By “ghost,” the KJV translators did not intend to communicate the idea of “the spirit of a deceased person.” In 1611, when the KJV was originally translated, the word “ghost” primarily referred to “an immaterial being.”

With recent Scripture translations, “Spirit” has replaced “Ghost” in most instances. Some of this came about because words don’t always hold their meanings. In the days of Shakespeare or King James, ghost meant the living essence of a person. Looking back, we see that “breath” or “soul” were often used as synonyms of “ghost.” During these times, spirit normally meant the essence of a departed person or a demonic or paranormal apparition. As language evolved, people started saying “ghost” when speaking of the vision of a dead person while “spirit” became the standard term for life or living essence, often also for “soul.” With slight exceptions, “ghost” and “spirit” changed places over some 300 years.

What is the difference between the Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost?, Got Questions

With regards to the English translation of the Book of Mormon through the holy prophet Joseph Smith, using Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost, YHWH Elohim talks to us in our own language (see 2 Nephi (LDS 31:3) (RLDS 13:4-5)), and Joseph Smith’s language was the King James Bible and the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary. I took the time to list sixteen ways that the Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost are used the same way in the Book of Mormon, including IT not HE, in The Holy Spirit and The Holy Ghost are the Same. In All Things You Should DO, I show how Lehi and Nephi tell us indirectly that plain points to Torah. I also show in All Things You Should DO how the Old Testament / Tanak lets us know that symboliclly light means Torah, and how that makes Moroni (LDS 7) (RLDS 7) about how to judge very clear and plain (Torah) rather than confusing.

2 Nephi (LDS 31:3) (RLDS 13:4-5)
AA 3 For my [Nephi] soul delighteth in plainness [Torah];
A-B for after this manner doth the Lord [YHWH] God [Elohim]
A–C work among the children of men.
A-B For the Lord [YHWH] God [Elohim]
AA giveth light [Torah] unto the understanding;
BA for He [YHWH] speaketh unto men
BB according to their language,
BC unto their understanding.

Below are all the verses I found with Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost in the LDS / Brighamite church copy of the KJV Bible. There are three cases of Holy Spirit in the Old Testament / Tanak. The Old Testament / Tanak has no instances of Holy Ghost. The Old Testament / Tanak passages are in Hebrew not Greek. There are four passages translated to Holy Spirit in the New Testament while there are eighty nine verses translated to Holy Ghost. Five instances of the Holy Ghost translations, the word holy had no Greek behind it, and the translators simply added the word holy, I assume, to keep some consistancy.

  • Matthew 12:31
  • John 7:39
  • Acts 6:3
  • Acts 8:18
  • 1 Corinthians 2:13

As you review the list of scriptures with Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost, I encourage you to click the links with the passage reference which will take you the interlinear on BibleHub for that verse. After you click on a few of them you will see how the different ways the English words Holy and Spirit are interacting with each other in the manuscripts of Greek and Hebrew, which at times is different than what is potrayed in English, which is simplified.

Holy Spirit

Psalm 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy [H6944: qodesh] spirit [H7307: ruach] from me.

Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy [G0040: Hagios] Spirit [G4151: Pneuma] to them that ask him?

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy [G0040: Hagios] Spirit [G4151: Pneuma] of promise,

Matthew 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy [G0040: Hagios] Ghost [G4151: Pneuma].

Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy [G0040: Hagios] Ghost [G4151: Pneuma], and with fire:

Matthew 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy [filler] Ghost [G4151: Pneuma] shall not be forgiven unto men.
