Prayers

Please take note that both Book of Mormon and D&C uses the word WINE and not water. There is no revelation to change the word from WINE to water. D&C (LDS 27:2-4)(RLDS 26)(1833 28)(1835 50)(1844 50) does state that we can use water instead of wine. Scriptures show a preference of using WINE over anything else. Even though D&C (LDS 27:2-4)(RLDS 26)(1833 28)(1835 50)(1844 50) states we can use water, D&C (LDS 27:2-4)(RLDS 26)(1833 28)(1835 50)(1844 50) states to go make your own WINE showing a preference of using WINE over water. D&C (LDS 27:5)(RLDS 26)(1833 28)(1835 50)(1844 50) states that when Yeshua / Jesus comes back He will drink the fruit of the vine, which is wine as does Isaiah 25:6 and D&C (LDS 58:8)(RLDS 58)(1833 59)(1835 18)(1844 18) which goes along with what Yeshua / Jesus said to the apostles in Luke 22:18.

Wine

Through out the scriptures we are told that WINE is be used for the sacrament, and is preferred even though you can use anything (see D&C (LDS 27:2-4)(RLDS 26)(1833 28)(1835 50)(1844 50)). Yeshua / Jesus even states He will be drinking the fruit of the vine on the lees, which is WINE, when He comes back (see D&C (LDS 27:5)(RLDS 26)(1833 28)(1835 50)(1844 50), Isaiah 25:6, D&C (LDS 58:8)(RLDS 58)(1833 59)(1835 18)(1844 18) and Luke 22:18. The LDS / Brighamite church even had a WINE mission till 1920 and prohibition to grow grapes and to make WINE for the sacrament (see Sacrament Prayers Chiasmus). D&C (LDS 89:5-6)(RLDS 86)(1835 80)(1844 81) can be a little confusing to understand. But knowing it is addressing the same problem as Paul is in JST 1 Corinthians 11:20-21 which is that people were drinking the WINE during the shared meal before the sacrament and they became drunk and not leaving any WINE for the sacrament (see Sacrament Prayers Chiasmus).

Genesis (JST 14:17) (KJV 14:18)
A And Melchizedek, king of Shalom,
-BA brought forth bread
-BB and WINE;
-BA and he brake bread and blest it;
-BB and he blest the WINE,
A he being the priest of the most high God [Elohim],

Deuteronomy 29:6
A Ye have not eaten bread,
B neither have ye drunk WINE or strong drink:
C that ye might know that I am the Lord [YHWH] your God [Elohim].

JST 1 Corinthians 11:20-21
A—DA 20 When ye come together unto one place,
A—DB is it not to eat the Lord’s supper [SACRAMENT]?
A–CA 21 But in eating every one taketh
A–CB before other his own supper:
A–CC and one is hungry, and another is DRUNKEN [WINE].

3 Nephi (LDS 18:1-3,8)(RLDS 8:28-30,37)
1 And it came to pass that Jesus [Yeshua] commanded His disciples that they should bring forth some bread and WINE unto Him. 2 And while they were gone for bread and WINE, He commanded the multitude that they should sit themselves down upon the earth. 3 And when the disciples had come with bread and WINE, He took of the bread and brake and blessed it; and He gave unto the disciples and commanded that they should eat.
8 And it came to pass that when He said these words, He commanded his disciples that they should take of the WINE of the cup and drink of it, and that they should also give unto the multitude that they might drink of it.

3 Nephi (LDS 20:5-8)(RLDS 9:42-44)
5 And when they had given unto the multitude He also gave them WINE to drink, and commanded them that they should give unto the multitude. 6 Now, there had been no bread, neither WINE, brought by the disciples, neither by the multitude; 7 But he truly gave unto them bread to eat, and also WINE to drink. 8 And he said unto them: He that eateth this bread eateth of my body to his soul; and he that drinketh of this WINE drinketh of my blood to his soul; and his soul shall never hunger nor thirst, but shall be filled.

Kneeling

Scriptures states that those blessing and those partaking of the sacrament are to kneel during while the prayers for the sacrament are being said. The word “with” in “kneel with the church” is stating that the church is also kneeling while the elders and / or priests are saying the prayers for the sacrament.

Moroni (LDS 4:2)(RLDS 4:3)
A 2 And they [elder & priest] did KNEEL down WITH the CHURCH,
-B and pray to the Father
-B in the name of Christ,
A saying:

Revelation received by Oliver Cowdery which was included in Joseph Smith’s Revelation Book 1
14 And the church shall oft partake of bread and wine [sacrament], and after this manner shall ye partake of it [sacrament]: 15 The elder or priest shall minister it, and after this manner shall he do: he shall KNEEL WITH THE CHURCH and pray to the Father in the name of Christ, and then shall ye say:

D&C (LDS 20:79)(RLDS 17)(1833 24)(1835 2)(1844 2)
A 76 And the elder or priest shall administer it;
-B and after this manner shall he administer it—
-B he [elder | priest] shall KNEEL WITH the CHURCH
A and call upon the Father in solemn prayer, saying:

Baptized

Only those who have been baptized and are repenting of their sins are to partake of the sacrament. There is nothing in the scriptures that you need to wait a year or any period to partake of the sacrament if you are repenting of your sins and are baptized.

3 Nephi (LDS 18:5)(RLDS 8:32)
5 And when the multitude had eaten and were filled, He [Yeshua] said unto the disciples: Behold there shall one be ordained among you, and to him will I [Yeshua] give power that he shall break bread and bless it and give it unto the people of My [Yeshua] CHURCH [BAPTIZED], unto all those who shall believe and be BAPTIZED in My [Yeshua] name [character].

3 Nephi (LDS 18:11)(RLDS 8:40-41)
11 And this shall ye always do to those who repent and are BAPTIZED in My [Yeshua] name [character]; and ye shall do it in remembrance of My [Yeshua] blood, which I [Yeshua] have shed for you, that ye may witness unto the Father [YHWH] that ye do always remember Me [Yeshua]. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have My [Yeshua] Spirit [behavior / Torah] to be with you.

3 Nephi (LDS 18:30)(RLDS 8:61-62)
30 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out from among you, but ye shall minister unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father, in My [Yeshua] name [character]; and if it so be that he repenteth and is BAPTIZED in My [Yeshua] name [character], then shall ye receive him, and shall minister unto him of My [Yeshua] FLESH [BREAD] and BLOOD [WINE] [SACRAMENT].

D&C (LDS 20:68)(RLDS 17)(1833 24)(1835 2)(1844 2)
68 The duty of the members after they are RECEIVED by BAPTISM—The elders or priests are to have a sufficient time to expound all things concerning the church of Christ [Messiah] to their understanding, PREVIOUS to their PARTAKING of the SACRAMENT and being confirmed by the laying on of the hands of the elders, so that all things may be done in order.

Administering

Scriptures state that only Elders, which are High Priest with an elected office in the church see Church Government, and Priests are to administer the sacrament. Administering and ministering deals with supplying it, preparing it, blessing it, and passing it.

Moroni (LDS 4:1)(RLDS 4:1-2)
A 1 The manner of their ELDERS and PRIESTS ADMINISTERING
-B the flesh and blood of Christ [Messiah] unto the church;
–C and THEY [ELDERS & PRIESTS] ADMINISTERED it [sacrament]
–C according to the commandments of Christ [Messiah];
-B wherefore we know the manner to be true;
A and the ELDER or PRIEST did MINISTER it—

D&C (LDS 20:38,40)(RLDS 17)(1833 24)(1835 2)(1844 2)
38 … An apostle is an elder … 40 And to ADMINISTER BREAD and WINE [SACRAMENT]—the emblems of the flesh and blood of Christ—

D&C (LDS 20:46)(RLDS 17)(1833 24)(1835 2)(1844 2)
46 The PRIEST’S duty is to preach, teach, expound, exhort, and baptize, and ADMINISTER the sacrament,

D&C (LDS 20:58)(RLDS 17)(1833 24)(1835 2)(1844 2)

Quotes

I believe I am the only living man now in the church who was connected with the School of the Prophets when it was organized in 1833, the year before we went up in Zion’s Camp…The sacrament was also administered at times when Joseph appointed, after the ancient order; that is, warm bread to break easy was provided and broken into pieces as large as my fist and each person had a glass of wine and sat and ate the bread and drank the wine; and Joseph said that was the way that Jesus and his disciples partook of the bread and wine. And this was the order of the church anciently and until the church went into darkness.
REMARKS OF ZEBEDEE COLTRIN on KIRTLAND, OHIO HISTORY OF THE CHURCH, Minutes, Salt Lake City School of the Prophets, October 3, 1883.

Having continued all day in fasting, and prayer, & ordinances, we closed by partaking of the Lord’s supper. I blessed the bread and wine in the name of the Lord, when we all ate and drank and were filled; then sung a hymn and went out.
Joseph Smith, 22–23 January 1833, Tuesday–Wednesday, History, 1838–1856, volume A-1

Posts

Below are Posts I have written dealing with the sacrament.

  • Sacrament Prayers Chiasmus: Sacrament Prayes structured into Chiasmus. Showing some forgotten history. Also showing how D&C (LDS 89:5) (RLDS 86) (1835 80) (1844 81) is connected with JST 1 Corinthians 11:17-34.

Scripture Studies

Below are Scripture Studies I have recorded dealing with the sacrament.

  • 2025-08-23: Deacons are to have no part of the sacrament. Teachers are to have no part of the sacrament. The sacrament is a renewal of the covenant you made before you were baptized.
  • 2025-08-15: The sacrament is to fill us physically and spiritually. D&C (LDS 89) (RLDS 86) (1835 50) (1844 81) talks about having a feast with sacrament as does Paul JST Corinthians 11:17-34. Lees from D&C (LDS 27) (RLDS 26) (1833 28) (1835 50) (1844 50) is a byproduct of making wine which is alcoholic. The bread and wine are not literally Yeshua’s flesh and blood for one that would go against Kosher law. Those who bless the sacrament are to kneel along with the church while the sacrament blessings are being given. The sacrament bread goes with commandments and the wine goes with joy. The order of commandments then joy is on purpose. How the sacrament prayers start with “O Elohim” is a plea. Both Moroni (LDS 5) (RLDS 5) and D&C (LDS 20) (RLDS 17) (1833 24) (1835 2) (1844 2) state WINE not water.
  • 2023-09-06: Expounding the sacrament prayers.
  • 2023-05-27: Sacrament prayers start with pleading.
  • 2023-05-20: Talking about the sacrament prayers. Bread goes with commandments, Wine with the atonement. Renewal of a covenant.
  • 2023-05-11: Nephites used wine for the sacrament. Limhites were saved by wine symbolic of the atonement. Wine on it’s own will get you drunk just like atonement without the commandments will condemn you. Limhites gave wine that was for them to the Lamanites. Sacrament prayer states wine. No revelation to change the word wine to water. Yeshua turning water to wine is like Moses turing water to blood. Don’t believe the wedding was Yeshua’s and why. Yeshua will drink wine on the lees, the stronger alcohol. You can’t make your own water for the sacrament. D&C 89, after D&C 27, states use wine for the sacrament. D&C 89:6 says wine for the sacrament.
  • 2023-04-27: Sacrament used to only blessed by adults with the hands up while saying the sacrament.
  • 2023-03-20: The sacrament is part of renewing or covenant with YHWH to keep all His commandments.
  • 2023-02-12: Talked about wine and how we should use it for the sacrament, and how it points to Yeshua’s / Jesus atonement. LDS / Brighamite church used to have a wine mission for the sacrament.
  • 2022-12-23: Sacrament means oat / covenant.
  • 2022-12-01: A thought regarding the sacrament with regards to not getting drunk and how it applies spiritually.
  • 2022-11-23: Looking at the word shed from the sacramental prayers.
  • 2021-01-13: Talk about the sacrament.
  • 2020-07-21: sacrament
